We build this stirred tank reactor for production lines that handle shampoos, liquid soaps, lotions, and similar low-to-medium viscosity products. It is a single vessel that combines mixing, heating, cooling, and vacuum deaeration, which is why it shows up in both small batch cosmetic plants and larger chemical processing facilities.
The vessel is constructed from 304 or 316L stainless steel, depending on the formulation chemistry. For products with high salt content or acidic pH, we recommend 316L. The inner surface is mechanically polished to a Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, and the outer surface is brushed or matte finished. Welds are fully penetrated and ground smooth to eliminate dead zones where product can accumulate. We use sanitary tri-clamp connections for ports, and the shaft seal is either a single or double mechanical seal. If you run vacuum, a double seal with a barrier fluid is the safer choice.
The agitator is a combination of a central anchor frame and high-speed disperser, which handles both bulk mixing and the breakup of agglomerates. For shear-sensitive lotions, we can switch to a counter-rotating mixer or a scrape-surface agitator. Heating is typically via a steam jacket or electric heating element, and cooling uses chilled water through the same jacket. The system can be configured for automatic temperature control with a PID loop.
Applications include shampoo manufacturing, liquid soap blending, lotion emulsification, and even some pharmaceutical creams. A typical batch cycle involves loading the water phase, heating to 70–80°C, adding the oil phase under high shear, then cooling and applying vacuum to remove entrained air. The vacuum also helps pull the product into a homogenous state and reduces foaming.
