The shell is SS316L, not 304, because you\’re dealing with cryogenic temperatures and chloride-bearing compounds that will pit standard stainless over time. We\’ve seen 304 fail in under a year when used with certain acid washes; 316L gives you a much longer service life without unexpected leaks.
The pressure vessel rating is not an afterthought. When you store liquid nitrogen, you are storing a substance that boils at -196°C and expands rapidly. This tank is designed with a pressure-rated head and reinforced welds to handle the internal pressure that builds up during normal operation and during emergency venting. We use full-penetration TIG welding on all seams, followed by pickling and passivation to restore the corrosion-resistant oxide layer. This is not a universal storage vessel. It\’s built for a specific set of conditions: liquid nitrogen transfer, chemical dosing, or similar low-temperature and moderate-pressure duties.
